Eating Testaccio: Market Tour and Tastings | Shared
This district of the eternal city is a unique combination of the ancient traditions and modern twists with current food trends popular all over the city. Our food tour will give you the chance to feel like a local and taste the Roman food classics surrounded by the distinct architecture of the Testaccio neighborhood, consisting of historical peculiar parts such at the Monte dei Cocci and the Pyramid to more recent revitalized Art and Cultural sites.
On this tour, you will visit the food market and the neighborhood starting from one of Rome’s oldest delis to eat unique prosciutto and truffle salami. You will taste suppli, a favorite Roman street food, and fried typical delicatessen, experience a Roman pasta such as Cacio e Pepe or Amatriciana, as well as discover new takes on classic bollito meat or typical stewed chicken. Depending on the season, this lively market will greet you with crates of Roman Zucchini with their delicious flowers ready to be fried, green artichokes, and piles of chicoria like only in Rome you can find.
Before concluding enjoying our artisanal gelato, we will also learn the stories of famous poets, painters, sculptors, and authors like Shelley and Keats who rest in peace nearby in the Protestant Cemetery of Testaccio, an unexpected place of art built right next to one of the most impressive tombs of Ancient Rome, the Pyramid of Cestius. Shelley wrote not long before he drowned and was buried here, “It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.”
Its towering cypress trees, abundant flowers, and greenery shelter a heterogeneity of elaborate and eclectic graves and monuments, nestled on a slope in the shadows of the Pyramid and adjacent to a section of Rome’s ancient Aurelian wall.
Choose the Testaccio food tour, a real experience beyond the flashes and the crowds of the historical center that will fill up your heart with smiling faces, good food, and a new surprising story.
